Ten Years: Memories and Milestones

Memories and milestones - celebrating 10 years of Phoenix Digital

Ten years in business is a moment worth pausing for.

Not just to celebrate the wins (although there have been plenty), but to reflect on the journey. The people, the projects, the lessons learned, and the moments that shaped who we are today.

This is our story. Our memories and milestones.

Where it all began

I met Chris while we were both freelancing at a creative agency in Manchester. We clicked straight away, both professionally and personally, finding we worked brilliantly together. Our skills complemented each other's and before long we'd become great friends too.

As our freelance contracts came to a natural close, there was a decision to make.

Go our separate ways... or build something together.

Thankfully, we chose the latter, and Phoenix Digital was born in 2016, setting up home in MediaCityUK.

The story behind the name

One question we've been asked countless times over the years is where the name Phoenix Digital came from.

Many people assume it was about us - about 'rising from the ashes'. In reality, it was never about us.

After a long thought process and brainstorming, Chris and I narrowed down a couple of ideas and sought the thoughts of our first two clients. They both agreed with us that ‘Phoenix Digital’ was a great fit for how we wanted to position ourselves, and what we wanted to deliver for our clients:

– Digital solutions should be highly intelligent and solve problems

– Built correctly, a website should last a very long time

– Looked after properly, they can be resurrected, renewed, re-energised and nurtured into something beautiful

And, when it’s done right, it can feel a bit magical.

That thinking still underpins everything today, expressed through the strapline:

Beautifully crafted. Expertly engineered.

The early days: two of everything

Looking back, it’s quite amusing how it all began with the number two:

– Two founders

– Two desks

– Two computers

– Two founding clients - Argos and Joseph Holt.

For a brand-new agency, those were big names to start with. And they set the tone early: Phoenix Digital was never about playing small.

Growth came quickly. Within the first year, our client base expanded with organisations including Russell & Russell Solicitors, Sheffield FC and manufacturing firm Trolex, laying the foundations for the long-term relationships that continue to define our business today.

There were even award nominations along the way, including recognition at the Northern Digital Awards and Prolific North Awards - a proud early milestone that showed the work was already making an impact.

Lessons learned (the bit people don’t always talk about)

Like any business, it hasn't all been straightforward.

One of the biggest things I've learned over the last ten years is that saying yes to everything isn't always the right answer. Like many new businesses, we wanted to help everyone.

But we gradually realised that smaller projects often required just as much care, attention and commitment as larger ones. That's simply how we work. If we're involved in something, we want to do it properly rather than churn out website after website.

We also learned that not every client relationship is the right fit, and that's okay too. It takes courage to turn work away.

It takes even more courage to recognise when a client relationship isn't benefiting either side, and making that decision to part ways, amicably and professionally, has been necessary in the past, for the well-being of our team and our business.

We have always been about building relationships with our clients and our support network. We fully immerse ourselves into the fabric of the organisations we work with, very much as a partner, and definitely not as a transaction. And that only works when both parties are of the same mindset.

The clients who shaped the journey

One of the biggest sources of pride over the past decade has been the breadth and impact of the clients we work with. Today, that includes organisations such as:

– George House Trust

– The Forward Trust

– British Wheel of Yoga

– National Tracheostomy Safety Project

– Abeceder

– Lovell Homes

– Kestral Construction Products Ltd

– Manchester Digital

– Russell & Russell Solicitors

– TR Ventures

– And our founding client, Argos.

Whether we're helping a charity to improve access to services, supporting a membership organisation with a better digital experience or developing bespoke platforms for commercial organisations, every project teaches us something new.

The team behind the work

While Phoenix Digital started with just Chris and me, today we're supported by a fantastic team:

– Russ ensures our front-end solutions meet optimum UX standards;

– Aled develops the robust back-end functionality that powers our platforms;

– Caroline combines design skills with project management and keeps everything moving in the right direction.

And then... there's our unofficial sixth team member.

Our AI Agent, Cursor, has become a valuable asset to how we work. We've always embraced technology where it genuinely adds value, and Cursor helps us with efficiency and accuracy, giving us more time to focus on creative thinking and problem solving.

We have personified Cursor, giving ‘him’ a column on our workflow management system and an entry in the holiday management software. Although he hasn’t taken any of his allowance yet!

Looking ahead

Ten years feels like a significant milestone, but the beauty of the digital world means we are still learning, all the time.

Technology has changed enormously since 2016 and the way we build websites is very different these days. AI, for example, is transforming our industry, and we’re all navigating this shift and finding ways to harness its capabilities.

But in this changing digital landscape, these constants still remain:

– Relationships still matter.

– Understanding our clients still matters.

– Building digital platforms that genuinely solve problems still matters.

Those principles are exactly the same today as they were when Chris and I sat down at two desks with two computers and an idea.

A thank you

As Chris and I reflect on the last ten years, there's one thing I'm certain of.

Phoenix Digital simply wouldn't be where it is today without our amazing team, our incredible clients, collaborators, suppliers, contacts and supporters who've been part of our journey.

Whether you've worked with us from the very beginning, partnered with us on a single project or joined us more recently, thank you for placing your trust in us and for being part of our story.

Here's to the memories, the milestones and the next chapter of Phoenix Digital.

From 2016 to 2026. A little greyer and few more wrinkles. But apparently I still like blue.
